Large-Scale Knowledge Creation and Building Competency

Leading and sustaining a Lean transformation inside and out

In 2010 the UK Highways Agency began a project to develop the agency’s continuous improvement capability and that of its supply chain using Lean principles and practices. This project included training practitioners, tracking benefits derived from the efforts, sharing knowledge across the agency and developing a Lean maturity toolkit. Derek will review how this project has had a massive beneficial impact on overall supply chain efficiency, and further explain how the agency is using detailed Lean Production Management techniques to measure performance on its £5 billion ($7 billion) Smart Motorway Program. Included in this presentation is a description of the importance of cultural change and leadership in deploying a lean construction strategy and how such can be achieved, along with the roles academia and the central government are playing leading the the Lean transformation of industry in the UK.
